October 19, 201142 New Charter Applications
NJ’s DOE received 42 charter school applications this week. (NJ Spotlight, The Record, Philadelphia Inquirer.) Twelve are redo’s – applicants rejected in previous rounds – and the rest are new to the process. Last April, the most recent deadline, the DOE received 58 applicants. Currently NJ has 80 charter schools that serve 30,000 kids.
Here’s the complete list of aspirants from NJ Spotlight. Aspirants include Bridge the Gap Academy Charter School in Irvington, Willingboro College Prep Charter High School, and the Whole Earth Charter School in Trenton, all aimed at low-achieving districts. There’s also proposals from the Shaolin Temple Charter School in Somerdale (the Philly Inquirer describes the sponsors as “a Buddhist temple with an emphasis on martial arts), a “military” charter school in West New York, and a virtual school in Teaneck.
