Assemblyman Brandon Umba introduced legislation that would provide a gross income tax credit of up to $500 to taxpayers who utilize high-impact tutoring.

Bill A5481 aims to incentivize the use of tutoring as a tool for households to combat learning loss experienced during the pandemic, which has wiped away seven years of progress in English, math and science, according to a New Jersey Department of Education analysis.

“It is crucial that we provide students with the resources they need to succeed,” said Umba (R-Burlington). “High-impact tutoring has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of struggling students. Tax credits would incentivize parents to invest in their children’s education and would make this type of tutoring more widely available.”

Unlike traditional tutoring, which often focuses on homework help and basic subject knowledge, high-impact tutoring provides personalized and targeted support to students struggling with specific subjects.
