November 16, 2023Newark Public Schools Host 37th Annual Title I Parent Conference
On Wednesday, November 8 the Newark Public Schools’ 37th Annual Title I Parent Conference, themed Brand New Day, began with warm welcoming remarks from Director Michelina Thornton, Board President Hasani Council, and Superintendent León. The event featured keynote speaker Mr. Robert Jackson, a professional athlete, renowned author, parent, and educator, who shared inspiring words with the attendees.
Hundreds of parents and guardians from throughout the District, joined by the parent liaison from each school, attended a diverse range of workshops and roundtable discussions led by esteemed experts. Topics included college exploration, estate planning, civic engagement, social-emotional and mental health, navigating the digital world, and strategies for turning reluctant readers into enthusiastic bookworms. In addition to the workshops, numerous organizational partners set up informational tables, giving parents access to valuable resources from nearly 40 partner organizations and several district departments.
Superintendent León emphasized the significance of celebrating parents, acknowledging their resourcefulness and declaring the day as a time to be “selfish” in recognizing their contributions. He reiterated the District’s commitment to recognizing the important impact of parents and guardians in the educational process, with the Annual Title I Parent Conference being just one way we recognize that importance.
Board President Council expressed gratitude to parents, guardians, and caregivers for their essential role in ensuring that students are present, focused, and ready to learn. The sentiment was echoed by Ms. Ingram, a mother with children attending West Side High School and Belmont Runyon School, who enthusiastically praised the conference for providing parents with valuable sources of information. According to Ms. Ingram, the event contributes to the growth and development of children by offering parents insights and tools to support their educational journey.
