As parents of a child with special needs who is on the disability spectrum, our journey has been one of both challenges and triumphs. Every day brings new opportunities to advocate for our daughter and ensure she has experiences that help her grow. But amidst the hurdles, there are many moments of joy and support that remind us why we are so proud to be part of such a caring and determined community.
Recently, we had the privilege of being part of an extraordinary event that not only touched our hearts but also exemplified the power of inclusivity and compassion. Swing for the Stars, a charity Fight Night organized by Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts, hosted recently on April 20th at the Rahway Recreation Center, offered students with special needs a chance to step into the ring and face off against their favorite professional fighters. It was an evening that allowed students – who have spent years studying and practicing kickboxing or MMA – the opportunity to enter the ring in front of a packed crowd of cheering fans to put their skills and bravery to the test.
As co-owners of SpeedPro Westwood, the exclusive printing and graphics sponsor for the event, our involvement went beyond just providing signage and banners. It was a deeply personal cause for us, as parents who understand firsthand the challenges of raising a child with special needs. Our dedication to this event stemmed not only from our commitment to supporting our community but also from our desire to honor all of the students who have worked so hard to be there.
We couldn’t wait to cheer on the children who participated in Swing for the Stars and it was such a wonderful opportunity for them to get in the ring, have fun, and show off their skills to friends and family. We are honored that we were able to donate to this event and lift up all members of our community.
For us, Swing for the Stars is more than just an annual charity event; it is a commemoration of inclusivity and empowerment. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the students as they were cheered on by their friends and family, was a moment to celebrate and is a testament to the resilience and strength of these children, who refuse to be defined by their disabilities but instead embrace their abilities.
The event was held in partnership with the Family Autism Network and Aces Youth Boxing Foundation Inc., and we are so happy we were able to contribute to a cause that is close to our hearts. These organizations work tirelessly to foster meaningful friendships, combat feelings of isolation, and provide opportunities for social growth and acceptance. By supporting events like Swing for the Stars, we are not only raising awareness but also making a tangible difference in the lives of children with special needs and their families.
“Sports are a great unifier and this event is huge for the children’s confidence. SpeedPro Westwood has been instrumental in creating an environment to make this a special day for the community,” said Danielle Schulmann, Pro Footballer and daughter of Tiger Schulmann. “It’s a privilege to contribute to this event, support an excellent cause, and be able to share one of the sports I love with the participants.”
As parents, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to shine, to feel courageous, and to be celebrated for who they are. Swing for the Stars showcased these values in the most profound way possible, reminding us that with compassion, determination, and community support, anything is possible.
Proceeds from the event were donated to The Family Autism Network and Aces Youth Boxing Foundation Inc. Several famous fighters were in attendance to participate with the students, including Louis Gaudinot, Ryan Burgos, Julianno Varricchio, Melissa Balic, Shane Burgos, Rob Varricchino, Jillina Rivera, Lyman Good, Nick Pace, Craig Alexander, Julio Arce, and Mike Trizano.
As we reflect on the success of Swing for the Stars, we are filled with hope and optimism for the future—a future where every child, regardless of ability, is given the opportunity to soar to new heights and reach for the stars.
