After the New Jersey school board elections last week, the winners in Asbury Park are incumbents Anthony Remy and Joe Grillo plus a new member, Wendi Glassman. The three candidates ran on a slate called “Support Asbury’s Children.”
What was their platform?
Change.
Grillo said, “Tonight, Asbury Park voters entrusted Wendi, Anthony, and me with Asbury Park’s most precious and valuable asset – our children. We won tonight by a two to one margin because Asbury Park families demand thoughtful, transparent, and immediate change in our school district – for our kids, our teachers, and our entire community.”
Grillo, Remy, and Glassman join Tracy Rogers, who was elected last year. With only three board members aligned on thinning down the top-heavy administration, addressing the lack of accountability for Superintendent Rashawn Adams, and remedying the poor teacher morale, unsafe conditions in schools, unsatisfactory student outcomes, and falling enrollment as parents vote with their feet, their views have been easily ignored. With an additional board member advocating for improving the lot of Asbury Park families, the odds improve.
The voters have spoken. They want “immediate change.” Now it’s up to the Board to deliver.
