June 6, 2024Antisemitic Incident at East Brunswick High School
On Tuesday East Brunswick Superintendent of Schools Victor Valeski was informed that this year’s edition of East Brunswick High School’s yearbook removed pictures and names of all members of the Jewish Student Union and replaced them non-Jewish students. East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen called this a “blatantly antisemitic act” and demanded an investigation.
This was first reported by My Central Jersey.
“Above all, I personally, along with the entire East Brunswick Board of Education, sincerely apologize for the hurt, pain and anguish this event has caused our Jewish students, their families and the impact this continues to have on the entire EB community,” Superintendent Valeski said. “East Brunswick Public Schools has been a pillar educational organization, thriving on our diversity. We do not tolerate bias and we investigate all reported antisemitism.”
Valeski also said, while some students already had the yearbook, the district would stop handing them out and work with the publisher to correct the erasure of Jewish students. The district will also work with law enforcement.
After the news broke, The Jewish Federation in the Heart of New Jersey issued a news release, calling the incident one of “seemingly deliberate and malicious alterations of photos and names of Jewish students.”
ABC News, which has been covering the story (as has NBC News), quoted Valeski: “If it is staff member, this would be a loss of a job. If it is a student, we would have to look at the code of conduct handbook.”
