January 10, 2023Tiny Education Tidbits From Murphy’s State of the State Address–And a Snub for the Commissioner
Today Gov. Phil Murphy is giving his annual State of the State address (full transcript here). Public education is a throwaway, meriting 113 words, a third as many as his remarks on reforming liquor licensing.
Also noteworthy: Murphy offered accolades to the following people in high places (not including the multiple legislators he thanked):
- Attorney General Matt Platkin
- State Police Superintendent Colonel Pat Callahan
- Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette.
- Commissioner of Human Services Sarah Adelman
- Department of Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli
- CEO of the Economic Development Authority, Tim Sullivan
Education Commissioner Angelica Allen-McMillan? Nary a mention, just a cold shoulder,
Here are Murphy’s complete remarks on K-12 education:
[We are leading by] centering our economic future around our best-in-the-nation public-education system so every child, in every community, is given the skills they will need to compete and win” and “prioritizing youth mental health through comprehensive means that don’t just connect kids with resources but empower parents and educators to identify negative signs and provide positive support.
We continued to increase our investment in our public schools to take further pressure off of property taxpayers – a total increase of more than $2 billion since our administration took office. And every penny of that is property tax relief.
We gave parents a sales-tax holiday on the back-to-school items their kids needed to get a strong start this past September.
