September 10, 2021BREAKING: Asbury Park District’s First Day Classified as a ‘Shitshow’
Asbury Park Public Schools District opened today for students—teachers started Tuesday–and sources tell me that much was awry under the leadership of newly-appointed superintendent Rashawn Adams. Here is what I’ve been able to confirm:
- When teachers came in on Tuesday to prepare classrooms and get organized, class schedules were not available, at least in two of the four schools. One Wednesday, the day before students returned, some teachers still didn’t have schedules for their classes and, thus, were unable to move forward. Also, some students don’t have schedules. For example, at Asbury Park High School, 100 schedules (combined teacher and students) are still missing.
- Today, the first day of school for students, Dr. Martin Luther King Upper Elementary School (grades 6-8, about 300 students) was evacuated due to a gas leak. Students were moved to the old auditorium in Barack Obama Elementary School, which is now closed due to district-wide decreasing enrollment. There was no social-distancing due to space issues. No word on mask-compliance.
- Three separate in-district sources labeled today’s opening a “shitshow.”
