February 12, 2024Great News From Newark For Four All-Star Students
Here is some great news out of Newark: Four KIPP Newark Collegiate Academy seniors have been awarded full-ride scholarships to four-year universities through The Posse Foundation, a nonprofit that works to build youth leaders. Two of these Posse Scholars will attend Cornell College and two will attend Davidson College.
The students are extremely excited to pursue a range of academics –-Quentin Lewis is interested in a career in mechanical or computer engineering, Lisbeth Gil wants to become a immigration lawyer, Menelik James enjoys English and Oscar Granados is considering mechanical, chemical, and aerospace engineering. These four students were selected because of their clear leadership skills.
- Quentin Lewis will attend Davidson University. He aspires to contribute to his community through STEM, which he sees as a pathway to a better society. Quentin is aiming for a career in mechanical engineering or computer engineering. He resonates deeply with the philosophy of living in the present and cherishing each moment.
- Lisbeth Gil will attend Cornell College. She plans to become an immigration lawyer. Lisbeth currently plays volleyball at NCA and tutors younger students. She will be graduating Summa Cum Laude! Lisbeth has worked at KFC and has been involved in an internship program for two years. Her avocations include philosophy, and writing is a source of solace for her.
- Menelik James will attend Davidson University. His favorite subject is English, which has contributed to his academic success and writing skills. As a member of NCA’s Student Government, he led a successful pep rally for nearly 900 students and staff! Menelik believes that having a support system like Posse during college is vital for ongoing encouragement. Menelik’s mantra is to find perseverance in the face of adversity. He sees himself as an ambivert, who can bridge gaps and ensure all his peers feel included.
- Oscar Granados will attend Cornell College. He is drawn to mathematics and science because of the challenges they offer. Specifically, Oscar is looking at mechanical, chemical, and aerospace engineering due to his passion for real-world applications. He has been recognized with honors and awards such as National Honor Society and STEM nominations. Outside of school, Oscar enjoys biking and playing baseball and soccer.
