March 7, 2024New Database: Hate Crimes Spike in NJ Schools
Hate crimes have spiked in New Jersey this past year, especially in K-12 school districts and colleges. According to new data released by Attorney General Matthew Platkin, the race most often targeted was Black and the religion most often targeted was Jewish. In response, AG Platkin’s office has announced a campaign called “No Hate in the Garden State.”
“The obvious reality is that bias is on the rise and it’s been given license by people who have megaphones,” the attorney general told Advance Media. “Social media platforms have, in my opinion, failed to live up to their own terms of service to keep content off their platforms, which don’t just exist on social media, but get acted upon in real life.”
One feature of the anti-bias dashboard allows you to click on a map of where the violence took place and what group it was directed towards. Currently in 2024 there were 2013 reported bias incidents, or 7 a day. Seventy-seven were against Black people, 65 were against Jewish people, and 21 were against Hispanic people.
There is also a map for violence in schools during 2023-2024. The highest number of hate crimes occurred in October. Most of the victims were Black and/or Jewish.
