NJER TV’s new short video features the New Jersey Children’s Foundation team that created the Newark Common App, launched this past spring to resounding success.
The Newark Common App was created to fill the void left by the traditional district, which had controlled parents’ applications to both district schools and public charter schools. This universal enrollment system for all city public schools worked well for over a decade, with parents able to choose the best placement for their children. However, in 2019 Superintendent Roger Leon and the city school board instituted a series of changes that discriminated against parents who wished to select charters, resulting in a separate and unequal system. Thus, the birth of the Newark Common App, which currently serves 80% of charter schools in the greater Newark area. The platform is funded by the non-profit New Jersey Children’s Foundation, which strives to build partnerships among all Newark schools. In this short video, NJER managing editor Laura Waters interviews NJCF’s Executive Director Kyle Rosenkrans, Head of School Support Sarah Yan, and Director of Family and Community Support Leslie Comesanas about what they’ve learned from this first year and their ultimate goal of renewing the alliance among all schools in the city of Newark.
