July 12, 2023NJ Teacher Sends Mixed-Race Student White Face Paint
On July 9, 2021 seven-year old boy who attends the Woodland School in Warren Public Schools district received an Amazon package. When he opened it up he found a black Afro-style wig and white face paint. There was no return address but when his mother contacted Amazon she was told the sender was her son’s teacher.
The youngster —his mother is of Black and Hispanic descent and his father is white.—identifies as mixed race. Upon receipt of the package, the parents called the school principal to condemn “the racist act of intimidation.” The principal replied, according to Central Jersey, but wouldn’t say how he would “address the issue.” When the parents contacted the administration and school board, they refused to conduct a Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying investigation, even though they are required to by law. When they contacted the Warren Police Department, they “declined to pursue” the case because “Amazon did not reply to a subpoena.”
These allegations were revealed in a lawsuit filed last week in Superior Court in Somerset County against the Warren school district which charges the boy was subjected to a “hostile educational environment” and that the teacher’s action was “nothing short of outrageous.”
Warren Public Schools is mostly white and Asian. Only two percent of students are Black.
The district has not responded to requests for comment.
