NJ Charter School Students Are 71% More Likely To Read at Grade Level Than District Peers
December 11, 2025Sean Spiller for NEA President? Hot Takes.
It’s true: Sean Spiller, former president of the New Jersey Education Association, is still thinking big, even after a disastrous campaign for NJ Governor. Matt Friedman of Politico posted earlier Friday,
Indeed, a brand-new partially-built website with links to bare-bones Facebook and Instagram pages confirms Spiller, who came in second-to-last during the Democratic primary for NJ Governor after spending $45 million in teacher union dues, is campaigning to lead the National Education Association, mothership to NJEA.
The website urges the public to send contributions to an address, PO Box 1290 Montclair, that Spiller used when he successfully campaigned to become Montclair mayor. His tenure was marked by controversy, including allegedly taking health benefits he wasn’t entitled to, taking the 5th to avoid self-incrimination, signing off on illegal no-bid contracts, threatening whistle-blowers, and championing school closures. Worth noting: Montclair Public Schools, whose school board was until recently mayor-appointed, is almost $20 million in the hole due to budgetary improprieties and looking at major staff cuts and state fiscal oversight.
Apparently Spiller is looking for his next act instead of heading back to his post as a teacher in Wayne, NJ. This is not the first time he’s contemplated a national role: When President Joe Biden was elected in 2020, Spiller pitched himself as U.S. Education Secretary. “I look forward to supporting President-elect Biden and his bold student-centered education agenda,” he said. That didn’t work out so maybe he heads one of the two national teacher unions?
After all, as NJEA’s president he made $440,000 — no way he wants to cut his salary by 75% by slinking back to Wayne. Outgoing NEA President Becky Pringle makes $496,000 annually so that’s the same ballpark.
After helming NEA? Next stop, the White House!
Here are some reactions from Jersey residents on Friedman’s scoop:
Montclair resident Matthew Frankel: “Spiller’s long desperate one-man journey to find a home for his inflated ego seems to know no bounds. He must have forgotten that any NEA member can easily google him.”
