November 15, 2024South Ward Promise Neighborhood and BRICK Host Communitywide Feast
The South Ward Promise Neighborhood has announced a special Thanksgiving event for the community from noon until 3 pm on November 23rd at the St. John Community Baptist Church. This event is dedicated to giving back to the community and celebrating the spirit of togetherness during this season of gratitude.
The gathering will offer a warm and welcoming experience for families and residents to come together. The event will feature food, live music, activities, and local resources provided by BRICK and the South Ward Promise Neighborhood. BRICK is a public charter network based in Newark, the first African-American-led charter management operator in the state. In 2014, BRICK created the South Ward Promise Neighborhood (SWPN) to provide local families with services that are need in order to help children in a holistic, student centered model. A merger with another public charter led to the creation of Gateway Academy.
“We are thrilled to host this Thanksgiving event in the heart of the South Ward for the seventh year,” said Nichelle Holder, Chief Advancement Officer of South Ward Promise Neighborhood. “This event symbolizes our ongoing commitment to our community and our goal to foster unity and well-being.”
The Thanksgiving gathering is one in a series of precursors to the exciting development of South Ward Promise Neighborhood’s new wellness center on Bergen Street, which will offer vital resources for maternal health, general health, wellness, and family support. This 45,000-square-foot facility will serve as a valuable community resource through partnerships with Saint James Health, the YMCA of Newark, and RWJ Barnabas.
“Building the new wellness center is a critical step in our commitment to serving the South Ward,” said Dominique Lee, CEO of BRICK. “Our vision is to provide a space that promotes not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being for our community.”
