The median salary for a public school teacher in New Jersey is $77,943.
In some districts—particularly those in high-income municipalities—teachers make far more and in some districts they make far less. Case in point: Lakewood Public Schools where the median salary in 2022-2023 was $56,621. (This may account for at least part of the problem of rapid teacher turnover —Lakewood teachers transfer to other districts at a rate of three times the state average—which today’s Asbury Park Press ascribes to uncertainty about funding.)
But let’s focus on the good news: in some school districts teachers, assuming they’re effective, earn almost as much as they should. According to an analysis by nj.com, here are the top ten median salaries in the state.
