September 5, 2023Wednesday’s State Board of Education Agenda Is Missing Something Big
The New Jersey Department of Education just released the agenda for the September 6th meeting of the State Board of Education. It’s pretty skimpy for what are typically marathon meetings: a couple of presentations, appointments, and adoption of some small amendments.
Here’s what’s missing: the scheduled recommendation by Acting Commissioner Angelica Allen-McMillan for the Board to approve state learning standards in English Language Arts (reading) and math.
According to chatter, the agenda was set to include a second reading of the standards, which haven’t been updated since 2016. Yet for reasons unknown, it was removed.
According to NJ state code, the process of updating standards “will be repeated every five years thereafter, based on recommendations by the Commissioner.”
Indeed, at the public meeting on April 5th, Allen-McMillan gave presentations on both ELA and math, noting that public comment would be closed on June 7th. From the April agenda:
“Resolution to Adopt the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (Division of Teaching and Learning Services) ELA Standards Math Standards ELA Presentation Math Presentation Discussion Resolution Commissioner’s Recommendation: That the State Board discuss the readoption of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards as revised for Mathematics and English Language Arts, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 6A:8-2.1(a).”
Expectations were that the Board would discuss and approve the updated standards on Wednesday. It is unclear why they are not on the agenda. Sure, COVID is cause for countless delays but it’s now been seven years since the standards have been updated. What’s the hold-up?
NJ Ed Report has queried the State Board of Education office for an explanation but had yet to reply as of press time. If there is a response, this article will be updated.
