The New Jersey State Board of Education meeting, on Wednesday September 6th, was more remarkable for what it didn’t include than for what it did.
However, the real action came at 2:00 that afternoon when, three times a year, the public has a chance to give remarks to Board members. NJ Education Report has covered the remarks by JerseyCAN Executive Director Paula White, which pointed as they were in urging the DOE to mandate effective reading instruction, didn’t match the fireworks produced by those who oppose the new rule that school districts can not inform parents when their child has questions about their gender identity unless the child has explicitly given permission. (The exception is if the child’s health or safety is at risk.)
Those present included parental rights groups like NJStandsUp, Moms for Liberty, and Team Protect Your Children. The Record reports that a conservative group called the Goldwater Institute, based in Arizona, is intervening on behalf of a Marlboro Township mother, Angela Tycenski, arguing that Attorney General Matthew Platkin’s lawsuit against the township school district is “unconstitutional.” The Pacific Justice Institute, a Christian organization, has also tried to intervene in a quest to overturn the NJ DOE’s rule that staff not inform parents if their child is questioning their gender identity.
To no one’s surprise, social media didn’t calm the waters. Via the Platform Formerly Known as Twitter (PFKT?), here are posts from what people say were 250 people at the public comment session, which also included representatives of NJEA and other groups that support the new guidelines.
