November 6, 2023How Much Cash Do You Need To Win a School Board Seat? Case Study: Ridgewood
With Election Day looming, school board candidates are out and about, knocking on doors, posting on social media, and making phone calls. That’s all free. Yet school board races are hot-button issues and some candidates are spending big bucks to land a seat that has no monetary compensation.
Example: in Ridgewood there is fierce battle for two seats among seven candidates. One of them, incumbent Saurabh Dani, has filed a report with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) showing he has spent $13,525.00 on this race, including Facebook, YouTube, and Google ads, lawn signs, and mailers. One resident told me, ” I am shocked at how much money is being spent in these races!”
Dani is backed by former police chief Frank Delvecchio (who appears to be dipping into Democratic politics–he ran unsuccessfully for Bergen County Commission last year) and, apparently, Gov. Phil Murphy.
